At the first meeting held in the City Hall, the Municipal Development Planning Committee of Isla Mujeres (COPLADEMUN /  Comité de Planeación para el Desarrollo Municipal de Isla Mujeres) was formed to achieve coordination between the municipality and state and local government. Its objectives are to integrate and assure participation in the planning process of individuals, organizations, institutions, and representatives of the private sector of the community, for the benefit of the island population. Members of the committee include: Martín Marfil Ordaz, coordinador general; César Poot Pérez, secretario técnico; Josué Francisco Villanueva Vargas, subcomité de Desarrollo Urbano y Medio Ambiente; Miguel Caballero García, subcomité de Obras y Servicios Públicos; Edgar Gasca Arceo, subcomité de Desarrollo Social y Salud; Suemy González Sánchez, subcomité de Desarrollo Económico y Turístico. (At least that's what I think the objectives are...it was written in politico-governmental language, in addition to Spanish.)

They say people who litter in the area should be punished, and that migratory birds are also affected, not only families and people who exercise.

The Convention Center is used by visiting and local athletes, as well as for social events such as weddings, baptisms, and quinceaneras.  The work of this department also includes offering environmental education in the schools, maintaining the school grounds, and they will soon begin a  planting campaign (campaña de reforestación), including on the road to Garrafon park.

Martes 22 de Octubre de 2013 05:46 Jesús Molina DIARIO RESPUESTA          The Department of Culture held a ceremony to honor Ramon Bravo Prieto on the 88th anniversary of his birth, which was led by the president of the DIF, with the participation of his widow, Maria Vallejo de Bravo. The event took place at the memorial to Ramon Bravo located near Mundaca Hacienda (at the entrance to Sac Bajo), and was attended by students from various campuses, and one of the young people recited a poem dedicated to the diver and environmentalist.

From this blog, Oct 15 2011.... October 21st is the birthday of Ramon Bravo Prieto, a leading oceanographer and environmentalist, who founded the first environmental protection group in the state, in 1995, in Isla Mujeres. The underwater photography contest that bears his name will take place that weekend and is sponsored by the City of Isla Mujeres. He is respected internationally and has many friends, family members, and colleagues in Isla Mujeres, where he passed away 13 years ago. The statue at the traffic circle by the entrance to Sac Bajo, near Mundaca Hacienda, commemorates him.

Remembering Ramon Bravo
 
         Ramon Bravo Prieto explored the seas of the world as an internationally renowned underwater photographer and oceanographer. He born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila in northern Mexico on Oct. 21, 1925. At the age of 22, he competed as a swimmer in the summer Olympics in London, and again four years later at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952.  (Results).  He was a well known journalist and author in the 60's and 70's, winning the Mexican National Journalism Award in 1979.  Premio Nacional de Periodismo
      He became dedicated to diving and underwater photography in the 1960's, winning awards and fame in Mexico, the United States, and Europe. In 1969 Italian director Bruno Vailati invited him to collaborate with him as a cameraman , and for seven years they filmed scenes for "The Encyclopedia of the Sea", "The Seven Seas" and "Men of the Sea I".
  In the mid 1960's, an Islander known as Valvula (for his exceptional lung capacity) was hunting for large grouper and lobsters in caves east of Isla Mujeres when he discovered "The Cave of the Sleeping Sharks". At that time, scientists believed that sharks required movement to live, and when Ramon Bravo sent his photographs and videos to the Smithsonian Institute, they were thought to be fakes. A female marine biologist who specialized in sharks, Dr. Eugenie Clark (aka The Shark Lady), came to Isla Mujeres and studied the phenomena. (Her article was featured on the cover of National Geographic magazine and she was given a gold medal from the Society of Women Geographers.)
       Jacques Cousteau brought his family to Isla Mujeres, aboard the Calypso, and worked with Ramon Bravo to create documentaries about the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks (1974) and the March of the Spiney Lobsters.
   In 1979, Bravo began construction of his home in Isla Mujeres, "Villa Sirenia", where he lived until  age 73, when he suffered a heart attack caused by an electric shock at the residence, on February 21, 1998. His ashes were laid to rest in the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks.
     A movie was filmed in Isla Mujeres based on Ramon Bravo's 1975 novel "Tintorera".  It was produced in 1977 under the same title, is similar to "Jaws", and is available on YouTube.  He  photographed and directed underwater scenes for the James Bond movie Licence to Kill (1989).  His list of works is HERE in English, and  a more comprehensive list is HERE in Spanish. Five thousand sea turtle hatchlings released into the sea+] Ver mas
Cinco mil quelonios son liberados al mar

The release Monday of 5000 sea turtle hatchlings took place on the Guadalupana beach with the participation of ~30 seniors and ~100 children and adults. This massive release was carried out under the auspices of the municipal Parks and Museums agency, in addition to the constant releases taking place according to their birthing requirements. The DIF social service agency worked in coordination on the event, and it is noted that the seniors enjoyed this incredible experience which teaches the importance of conserving the wildlife that are characteristic of this area.


Crash of two motorcycles leaves two injured

Oct. 21...There was a collision between two motorcycles yesterday at 8:35 am near the Middle School on Rueda Medina Avenue when an unnamed driver did not respect "señalamientos de tránsito". (This can mean traffic signnal/sign or traffic policeman.), and was immediately taken into custody.  Both people on the other motorcycle were injured by the strong impact and taken by the Red Cross paramedics to the General Hospital for treatment. They were aboard a black BIZ scooter, and the driver is Lurencio Trejo, aka “Huadin”, and the passenger is Yesenia who is the cleaning person for the Mayor of Isla Mujeres. Both motorcycles were taken to the impound yard, and authorities will determine the legal procedures.



The other two PE stories are about the new municipal Committee that was installed yesterday and Juan Carlos Figueroa's opinion on the potential negative effect of the increase in the IVA/VAT tax, which have been covered already. The increase takes place in January & there will probably be no shortage of articles disliking it & saying it will have bad effects.  I will probably be skipping more of them due to the redundancy, and because I prefer translating news about what is happening or has happened, rather than opinions about what may happen.

October Events 

.In October there are occasional releases of baby turtles that were incubated at the Tortugranja, at dusk on the eastern beaches of Media Luna or Guadalupana. (Last year the last public release was Oct. 7). The Blue Crabs migrate with the full moons, and there are usually organized groups to help them safely across the roads. Watch out for them in Sac Bajo and along the southeastern part of the island. The American holiday of Halloween is observed by the expats & a few candy loving kids, while the whole community observes Day of the Dead on November 1st & 2nd. Special foods are available in the weeks before, and Hanal Pixan altars appear in mid or late October. The Orianid meteor shower due on the 18th & 19th will be affected by light from the  full moon.
