There was a meeting with the Civil Protection agency about prevention activities for storms and hurricanes, and information was officially released to the media advising citizens to take appropriate precautions for the possible presence of heavy rain. The public is asked to keep their yards clean and take any steps necessary to prevent flooding. (Tropical Storm Karen is moving through. There is more info below.)

Leer más...There has been an increase in tourism activity in Punta Sam, a port that is estimated to represent 2.4 million dollars in tourism activities for the cooperative that offer diving diving, fishing, boat tours, and whale shark tours. ( Either the years are reversed or there is a typo & maybe the 2013 stat should be 2189. Comparing 2012 and 2013 from January to August, the number of 'touristic operations' performed is given as increasing from 1818 for last year and 1189 for this year).
In addition Punta Sam is a port of entry and exit for people, goods, groceries, vehicles, construction materials, etc, providing vital supplies for Isla Mujeres. From January to August in 2012 there were 24,753 passengers, while in the period in 2013 there were 28,661 which is an increase of 3908 passengers. During that same time period in 2012, the ferries arrived 1346 times, while in 2013 they arrived 1538 times, which is an increase of 14 percent. They moved 5 percent more cargo in the first two thirds of this year with 69,781 tonnes in 2013 compared to 66,431 during this time last year.

There are no funds budgeted for repairs to the fleet of vehicles that collect and process trash. The Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) agency has been working in Isla Mujeres for nearly two weeks and will be here through Friday (tomorrow), and then return October 28-31st, and the other dates are given through January of 2014. They have ~100 credentials that have been waiting to be collected, which they may burn if they remain unclaimed from their module in La Gloria.

UPCOMING EVENTS
The Artist's fair will be the third Thursday in October due to the change of government & will resume being the first Thursday in November. Oct. 17th, Town Square 4-7p.
See Live Music schedule at top of page for Live music during low season. Fayne's is closed in early October. Some gigs are more intermittent during October & can be prone to weather cancellations.
I am working on the events schedule for October-November. There is usually a Mayan-Caribbean Cultural Festival, and of course Day of the Dead, which lasts over a week here as Hanal Pixan. At the end of November is the town saint celebration. Then in early December is the Virgin of Guadalupe festival which begins the Christmas holidays that continue into January and the Day of Kings..
