Impulsan la protección de la tortuga marina

ISLA MUJERES, 28 de agosto.-Over 5000 sea turtles were released on Tuesday at dusk, with the participation of about 30 seniors and about 100 people in general. This massive release was the first (announced) public release of turtles, and there have been ongoing releases as the turtles are hatching out. This event was dedicated to the older adults, to celebrate the Día del Adulto Mayor, with children, teens, and adults encouraged to participate as well. This activity emphasizes the importance of protecting marine wildlife, and promotes awareness about turtle conservation among all members of the population. On Wednesday the seniors can enjoy a free haircut, and makeovers. These activities will continue until Friday and were scheduled by the DIF, social service agency. The turtle release was coordinated by the Parks and Museums department of the City.

Modifican típicas fachadas de casas caribeñas o yucatecas por unas más modernas

ISLA MUJERES, 28 de agosto.- Gradually the urban landscape of the island has been changing as houses, hotels, shops, and restaurants are renovated, and as you walk around you can see the various works. The new ferry terminal is expected to be completed in December, with an investment of over 34 million pesos. It will feature a commercial area, showers, waiting room, and parking. The Town Hall has been painted and having repairs, to be in good condition for the new administration. Some homes no longer have their Caribbean or Yucatecan facades, and now have modern facades and minimalist architecture. There have also been changes to the drains. It should be mentioned that island families downtown have sold their homes to foreigners who offered a good sum of money, and they have gone to live in the more remote colonias or ?which have been invaded. (o bien las que han sido invadidas.)

Por Carlos Gasca-Quequi.- Neighbors of the Karma nightclub are complaining to the Mayor and the media about the noise from the club that they say is 'unbearable' and sometimes goes on until five in the morning. Neighborhood resident Luis Ángel Rivera Cano said more than 70 families are affected, and the neighbors claim it has a permit to operate as a bar, but is operating as a nightclub. They sent their petition and complaint to the Mayor and City Council on August 5, and say the government has turned a blind eye because the club is owned by an alderwoman, Marcelina Fitz Campuzano. -

Classes resumed normally on Wednesday, after a two hour work stoppage on Tuesday by teachers at primary schools in Isla Mujeres. Parents are concerned that future strikes could have a negative impact on the education of their young children. One parent explained that they want to be consulted so they can support the teachers without using methods that can cause the children to have an incomplete education.
Suffering from a lack of visitors

Hotels and businesses have an occupancy of ~30%, said the Director of Tourism, Isaac Sulu. He said there have been no reports of temporary closings of businesses, but some do not open regularly every week, to save money on their utility bills. Boaters do not want to waste fuel, and perform maintenance during low season. Businesses whose employees receive tips tend to be busier on the weekends. Tourism is limited, and most are adults, from the US, Canada, & Spain. (The streets were busy this evening, and Ballyhoo was packed. I was hearing a fair amount of Italian at the turtle release, and there are also tourists in town from Israel. Lotsa Texans, but not many Canadians.)

There were also workers from hotels and students from schools who were encouraged to participate in the turtle release, which was conducted as part of the activities for Grandparents Day. Both children and seniors participated in this activity. Statistics this year are expected to exceed those of last year. A second or even third release is expected due to the large number of sea turtles that are being born in these protected areas, after being rescued from their nests. This release was part of the annual "Sea Turtle Protection 2013".

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are nesting on the eastern beaches in the wee hours. There are Tortugranja personnel monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills. The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony, and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!
There are blue and red crabs migrate to & from the sea during the full moons, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle & in Sac Bajo
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.
