Grupo de adolescentes roban carritos de golf para divertirse

Manuel VALDEZ
ISLA MUJERES, 10 de agosto.- Officers of the State Judicial Police detained a group of minors Friday night where were engaged in the theft of golf carts. A twelve year old ("CGBP") was caught driving a golf cart that had been reported stolen from Ciro's rental agency. The child was questioned and it was learned there were a total of four minors involved.
The officers located all of them and their parents and took them before the Public Ministry that same Friday night. The minors alleged that Carolina del Carmen Ponce, 38, paid them 100 pesos to steal a golf cart. She was charged with corruption of minors and as a co-participant in a robbery.
The 16 year old was identified as the one responsible for pushing the cart over the cliff, which was found Thursday morning, along with a twelve year old ("CMC") and his/her 15 year old brother. They said they were fulfilling a dream, like in the video game "San Andres" where the character jumps out of a vehicle as it goes over into a void.
It is noted that their crime spree that night involved three golf carts which were property of three different rental agencies. Their activities included taking pictures on their cellphones in  locations they visited during the night.
The families agreed to pay the damages to the golf cart that went over the cliff, which were 7000 pesos. (~$580usd. Yesterday's articles said the cart had been purchased two weeks previously for $5000. It looked like it had ~that much in damage to the roof. Pretty hardy, and lucky it didn't go into the sea.)

Four minors involved with golf cart robberies
Cuatro menores involucrados en el robo de carritos de golf en ‪#‎IslaMujeres‬ http://t.co/RPDvTIXtex
In their confession they explained that their spree that night began with theft of the cart of architect Juan Alberto Tapia, and after they had ridden around the whole island, they stole a cart from Ciro's rental agency. With two vehicles, they had two people in each cart and went to Sac Bajo, by hotel Villa Rolandis, where one of the carts ran out of gas, which motivated them to steal the third cart, which they took from the parking lot at the hotel. The abandoned the architects cart at the hotel and decided to go to the Caribbean sea near the Trash Transfer facility, and then the decided to ditch the cart over the cliffs. All four are minors and the youngest are two 12 year old, the others are 16 and 17 years old. The Police commander confirmed that the parents were brought in to be made aware of the gravity of this problem. The reporter notes that it appears there has been a lack of supervision on the part of the parents.

Por Carlos Gasca > Quequi.- Entrpreneurs a seeking to establish a dialogue with the Mayor-elect Agapito Magana Sanchez to establish dates to launch plans that were mentioned in his campaign for improvement of Isla Mujeres. They are asking for more money to be invested in the improvement of the urban image of both Rueda Medina (main street) and the eastern malecon seawalk. The reporter said a tour of the malecon revealed it was suffering from neglect with fixtures in poor condition, no plants, and an abandoned appearance. On Rueda Medina needs to be regulated, in regard to the golf cart rental agencies who use the curbside areas as tho they were their private parking spaces. They also want more promotion of activities such as fishing for sailfish and swimming with the whale sharks.

Hoteliers ask for tourism promotion to focus on their sector of smaller hotels

Isla Mujeres: Without public transport

 It is not known why.
A couple of tourists waited for more than two hours for a bus, but neither of the Turican  buses passed by. On past occasions there has been a piece of paper posted reporting the reason for the suspension of service, which this reporter estimates has happened almost a half dozen times. (I recall two or three reported in the papers). There was no notice posted on this occasion, and a bus was observed parked in one of the neighborhoods of the island. The reporter did not locate any workers.

No resources to renovate the hurricane shelters
There are three shelters which are operational and will temporarily accommodate up to 300 people and they are located at the SUTSAIM city workers union, the Mexican Red Cross building, and the island Community Center. These sites are intended for the residents of the irregular colonia of Guadalupana, as well as those with fragile homes in El Cañotal, Miraflores, Salina Grande, Salina Chica and La Gloria. There is no intention to prepare more temporary shelters, as they generate overhead when they are unused, and people prefer to stay with their families.

The boat tour operators are reporting demand for their services is at sixty percent, which is less that they expect. Previously they had been working at 100% and are puzzled that they are now at 60-70%. Their rates have been maintained at 350 pesos perperson, including food. Many people are returning to their hometowns. It is noted that during July and August they are serving many domestic tourists and there are groups arriving in buses.

Upcoming Events

LOOK UP! Tonight & before dawn ... The annual Perseid Meteor Shower is supposed to peak in the wee hours of Sunday night/Monday morning!
The meteors are said to be most visible between midnight and dawn. The farther south you are, the later they are likely to be more visible. This is because the shower's radiant point (The point in the sky they appear to radiate from) needs to be above your horizon before you can see most of the meteors. The Perseus constellation ascends in the northeast around midnight & is highest in the sky before dawn. However it is hard to spot,  so look for the W shaped constellation Cassiopeia if you want to spot the radiant point. This is not necessary, tho, because the meteors will appear in all parts of the sky. Jupiter & Mars will rise in the eastern sky before dawn.

Don't miss the Perseids next month! They're one of the most reliable and visible meteor showers of the year.

More information on how to spot them: http://bit.ly/14WZNjp

The bright object near tonight’s moon in the early evening sky – August 10, 2013 – is the planet Venus. Saturn is harder to spot.

The waxing crescent moon and brilliant Venus appear low in the west at evening dusk, August 10, 2013.

As dusk turns into darkness, look for the star Spica and planet Saturn higher up than the moon and Venus. The meteors will pick up in number after Saturn sets at late evening. (I think it sets later down in the Yucatan)

The morning planets before sunrise in mid-August 2013. Jupiter will be easy to see in the predawn and dawn sky. Mars and Mercury will pose more of a challenge.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and are held in the water tanks at the Tortugranja until the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana. These events will occur periodically until early October and are usually announced a day or two in advance. They are rescheduled if the sea is rough.
Lately there have been many rays, in addition to many whale sharks. From MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony,  and some large fish while snorkeling offshore. Lotsa mama turtles visiting our beach lately!

There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July-August, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.
