Municipal Comproller Iris Beatriz González Dzib said they will run a computer simulation on July 26 & 27th of the governmental changeover. The Comptroller staff will meet with each of the agency directors to make a review of their records to assure that everything is prepared for the final updates and delivery. There will be another practice drill held in late August. The Mayor has given assurances that there will be an orderly transition that is transparent, and asked all employees to be responsible for their obligations.

Fishermen affected by delay of assistance |
Afecta atraso de apoyo a pescadores |
Ovidio Lopez It is more than two weeks into the lobster fishing season, and the hyperbaric chamber still does not have a specialist. The fishermen are hoping the state Ministry of Health will solve this problem in upcoming weeks. There is also a need to service the communication system to receive first hand information when an accident occurs, since the antenna for the marine radio has deteriorated, and is at risk of falling in a gale. The 260 fishermen have been paid 1500 pesos of their support to assist them thru the lobster closure months of March thru June, and are waiting the other 8500 pesos. The City is having financial difficulties, which include meeting this commitment of 2.2million pesos. Quequi notes the payment of 1500 pesos in support totaled to 390,000 pesos.

Por Carlos Gasca-Quequi.
Residents of Canotal have been complaining of unstable water pressure, which occurred three days ago and again yesterday. At times the water didn't get to the tanks on the second story, and is not a problem for those who have one story. They say it may be due to maintenance work on the hydraulic network. Residents say this problem has been recurrent, so some have installed pumps to move the water up to their tanks. Others bath in buckets when they find their tanks are empty. The reporter does not know if the problem is also occurring in La Gloria, where there is higher elevation (mayor disnivel.or.greater slope).

Sunrise this morning from MVC B&B
I saw this at first light and went down to check for turtle eggs, since they would be vulnerable if exposed like that. This shows the 'egg tube' they dig after they make the big hole. She hit a rock at the last coupla inches and quit. They dig in the dark. (Sometimes you can see the sand flying, but since the sand covers them, they can be hard to spot except for the movement). Earlier this year, we had this area dug out & the rocks removed, because last year a number of mama turtles tried to nest there unsuccessfully. There's a few more rocks that gotta go! They do their digging in the wee hours, and return to the sea before the first light.
While she was resting, I got rid of the dogs that were barking at her. (Two were shoo'd home, the others were tricked into my house.). I came around from the front yard & stood between her and the street/propane tank while we both rested quietly a moment, then she turned around & headed back toward the sea.
The drop off is higher to the right, and she was determined to go over the rocks, so at this point we steered her to best spot & she went over thhe edge without flipping over & apparently unscathed. (Guests & friends have helped the turtle guys flip two back onto their feet recently, in the area.).

It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills. The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana beaches. The releases usually begin around the end of July & be held periodically until early October.
Lately the water has been very calm and there have been many manta rays, with many swimming upside down, in addition to many whale sharks. Offshore from MVC, we have been seeing dolphins & turtles from the balcony, and lotsa big fish while snorkeling.
There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.
The Super full moon will be rising over the Caribbean at ~6:30 on Sunday and about an hour later nightly link
