With increasing costs and justified needs, the fishermen seek to increase the official price of lobster per kilo, while the purchasing agents from Cancun want prices to remain the same as last year, or to decrease. It is the marketers who finally determine the cost, which is currently unknown while they make their proposals, and they are in talks with the Federation of Fishing Cooperatives. Currently the proposed price is 450 pesos per kilo of tails and 220/kilo for live lobster.  The president of the "For Social Justice" cooperative, Baltazar Gomez Catzin, said it would be more profitable if the fishermen sold their product on their own, establishing their price, because the agents haggle increasingly without consideration for the risks taken by the fishermen, the scarcity of the product which means they must go farther out and dive deeper, and the days when the weather prevents them for working. At an exchange rate of 13: 1, (The ATM's are paying slightly higher, the cash exchanges slightly lower.) that is equal to tails at $34.60 per kilo or $15.70 per pound, and live lobster at $16.90  per kilo or $7.70  per pound

Saturday a lecture was given by Marko Alcaraz Ley, who is a certified instructor of the Pakula fishing system in America. He is a naval engineer from the university of Veracruz. He gave presentations about different fishing techniques, and spoke about the economic importance of this activity to tourism destinations. He talked about the use of artificial lures for trolling, and techniques to entice predators with samples or baits, and spoke about mechanics of "Drop Back", which is better known as "Dar de Comer" (Give to Eat), and techniques to catch the blues (Blue Marlin). This conference was coordinated by the municipal Tourism Promotion Trust, and the speaker said he hopes to influence fishing methods throughout Mexico and Central America. He acknowledged that Isla Mujeres has a good scenario for sports fishing, lending interest in making this place a location for great tournaments, while the surrounding environment lends itself to this activity. Mr Ley has been a collaborator of the National Sport Fishing Federation (Federación Nacional de Pesca Deportiva AC)  and Director of Pesca en Mar (Sea Fishing). He has participated in many tournaments in the Gulf of Mexico and Mexican Pacific, placing in the top three positions on 28 occasions, which included winning first place six times and second place on eight occasions.

The lobster season  begins today and will run for four months. The hyperbaric chamber is in working order, with thanks to efforts from two political (PRI) candidates. Director of the Board & representative of the State Federation of Fishing Cooperatives, Baltazar Gómez Catzín, confirmed that the chamber is 100 percent operational and said that five members of each of the local fishing cooperative's boards are aware of the work that has been done and many of them have received training courses in operating the capsule. He said it never hurts to have a basic knowledge of the operation of the equipment and more so when it comes to saving the life of a fellow fisherman. (The chamber had major repairs done last season, and was reported to be operational, but was not in use because there was no contract with a doctor specialized in its use. There were some classes given to hospital personnel, but they said they were not adequately trained to operate the chamber. The recent work in the past two weeks included corrections to some of the work previously done, like changing brass oxygen lines for stainless steel and adding gauges.)

Men are associated with the number four which represents the four corners that a milpa has, which are the directions they leave to go hunting, fishing, or to market, among other activities. At three months for girls and four months for boys, the infants are carried astride a godfather's hip with the belief that this would encourage bowed legs which enabled them to walk faster.

.The friar Diego de Landa described the social behavior of the Maya as follows:
"They are clean, cheerful, and sociable; and they like to talk, laugh and make jokes. They have a confident character and are endowed with a strong sense of justice. They are generous and very hospitable, and they share their things with strangers even if they have little of it (..) They take advice from the elders and boasted of being old." They are also described as active, energetic, and hardworking, despite their corn based diet. 
      They had customs that affected aspects of physical beauty including practices that altered cranial shape and encouraged strabismus among infants, as well as practices involving piercing of nose, ears or lips, and filing of teeth.
  The article talks about the importance of music and of ceremonies and dances to prevent problems or bad spirits, especially relating to agriculture, and how these were male ceremonies, except for some elderly women who performed the dances. It has a little information about their beliefs about death and the afterlife, including the belief that the dead return to earth for a week each year, when their families honor and commemorate them.

The fishermen are excited to return to this activity which has been banned since the first of March, and some have been moving to their camps in Isla Contoy and at the lagoon Chacmuchuc.  The Director of the cooperative For Social Justice, Baltazar Gómez Catzín, said the fishermen have high hopes that this season will be as good as least year when the five cooperatives produced 45 tonnes of lobster. Because of the economic benefits of fishing for lobster, more and more fishermen are engaged in the activity, despite the risks from diving to the depths where the crustacian lives. He wanted to use this opportunity to remind fishermen not to work in "inconvenient" conditions because in a  majority of cases of decompression illness, consumption of alcohol or other toxic substance was a factor.

  Calm seas today, but bigger breakers, and the sun is shining. Yesterday we had a sunny morning, then rain in the afternoon-nothing intense. It brought very pleasant, cooler temperatures.

 This morning's Backyard Turtle Trails....

 I'm not sure if this was one mama turtle or two. Toured the upper beach & made a nest at left, half-burying that boulder in sand.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
       By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana beaches. The releases will begin in about a month & be held periodically until early October.
    Lately the water has been very calm and there have been many manta rays, with many swimming upside down, in addition to many whale sharks. Offshore from MVC, we have been seeing dolphins & turtles from the balcony, and lotsa big fish while snorkeling. 
 There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.

I now have the task of liquidating all assets of the school. We will be having a sale on the 6th of July at the school, for the school supplies and lots of books for learning/teaching English, among other things. There are some bigger items that I have yet to put a price on, including a desktop 21" Mac computer and a business printer that makes b&w copies at a very fast rate. We also have a projector and screen, good for watching movies from the internet. I am not in a huge hurry to sell these bigger items, just in case someone steps forward and wants to start another small business teaching English or whatever. And I have the civil association (non-profit) that can easily be transferred to any other name and cause with minimal red tape. IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN TALKING ABOUT STARTING UP A NEW LITTLE NON-PROFIT FOR WHATEVER REASON/CAUSE ON ISLA, PLEASE CONTACT ME. I MAY BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU SOME SUBSTANTIAL HELP.

Isla Animals  Daily Update: This is our wonderful Golda going for a swim, she really loves it. Golda is the littermate of Ricardo and is still fighting skin issues, nothing life threatening but definitely ongoing. It never ceases to amaze me how long it takes these street pups to catch up. I’m always thinking - good food, vitamins and TLC - they’ll bounce back, but that simply is not the case. When you consider a hungry street momma with very little good nutrition for her own body and then after the pups are born and nursing she has even less to provide, it’s no wonder these little guys fall so far behind. Another good reason for aggressive spay and neuter programs. I’ve sent her back to Arturo for suggestions and will let you know what he says. She’s such a sweet, independent little thing. Two new pups just came in, I will post pictures of them, we are wondering if one of them is one of Flora’s lost pups.
