Both areas were tested two months ago and found to be clean and safe. The ocean currents contribute to the cleanliness of the water around Isla Mujeres.
Tons of trash accumulated
State government comes to the rescue
Se acumulan toneladas de basura

El Gobierno del Estado entra al quite
Manuel VALDEZ
ISLA MUJERES, 24 de julio.-.
Leer más...Due to an accumulation of an estimated 1500 tonnes of garbage at the trash transfer facility on the island, the state is providing two trash compacting trucks which can transport about 80 tonnes daily. The Mayor explained that the problem resulted from recurrent breakdowns of the equipment that transfer the trash to the mainland. The trash compactors are being provided by the Ministry of the Environment and each have a capacity of 35 tonnes. The 'gondola' is being repaired, which has an ability to hold up to 50 tonnes of trash. The trucks will be on Isla for 20 days, making two trips daily, averaging over 700 tons. With the two loaned compactor trucks moving 140 tonnes daily, (35 tonnes each= 70 tonnes per trip x 2 trips), in ten days they could theoretically move out 1400 tonnes of the 1500 tonne backlog. There is three or four dozen tonnes of trash being generated daily. ) The Mayor also said there is a need to rent a tractor truck and a backhoe.

The former president of the Isla Blanca fishing cooperative, Gabriel Rosel, said there could be a judgement by a judge at any time, which could reverse the eviction of the fishermen from the Federal Zone, which occurred in November 2011. At that time there were removed from about 160 square meters, due to an order by a judge, involving the Ministry of Communications & Transport and the order was executed by the Merchant Marines and the Navy. The cooperative filed legal action against the Ballesteros family who obtained the concession during the administration of Mayor Godoy, when it was designated as "excedente" (surplus). The lawsuit involves the Dirección de Catastro municipal, Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo (Apiqroo), Capitanía de Puerto, la familia Ballesteros and la cooperativa citada. Por Carlos Gasca-Quequi.- Guadalupe Martínez Márquez, president of the association of Hotels of Isla Mujeres (HIM), said occupancy is above 55% among their members. She noted that the most difficult months are September, October, November, and early December, noting that times can worsen if there is a hurricane or storm alert. She said hurricanes can occur in September or October, and are a concern you cannot escape when you live by the sea, so you must be prepared. The slump that occurs is a normal event that occurs every year, and currently the summer holiday season is going well. -

Por Carlos Gasca-Quequi.-Unnamed young people are hoping the change of government changes policies associated with starting a business in Isla Mujeres, because they say the procedures are cumbersome and the fees are high. They would prefer the license fee for use of the property (uso de suelo) were a one time fee rather than being annual. There are other costs like property taxes, operating license, anuncio publicitario (commercial fee?), garbage collection, and payments to organizations like SIEM and the Chamber of Commerce. Removing trash in Isla Mujeres

Realizan traslado de basura en Isla Mujeres
jul 24, 2013 16:24 (This is a photo of many trash trucks in a row somewhere that does not appear to be Isla Mujeres., so I left it tiny.). The first 100 tonnes of trash have been removed from the Trash Transfer facility, which is expected to be free of debris in 20 days. With the help of two compactor trucks that each remove 35 tonnes of trash daily, and the two gondolas of the City which transport over 50 tonnes, there will be 80 to 100 tonnes removed daily to the mainland. One tractor trailer has also been obtained to expedite the work. With this equipment, they trucks can make two trips daily and transport up to 200 tonnes each day.

Sunrise this morning from MVC B&B
A turtle was digging shortly after moonrise. She chose a spot on the upper beach, where they generally won't lay because they run into large rocks after they dig down a few feet below the sand. She was out kinda early, and there was more activity than they are usually comfortable with. The turtle guy walked by a coupla times...he didn't notice her the first time, & ducked and retreated when he spotted her on his second pass. Some tourists walked thru & didn't notice her, but another group walked up with flashlights & stood nearby watching her until she left. (Usually the turtle tries digging in another spot, but they do prefer privacy.) Then I went down & chatted with them about ways to avoid disrupting the mamas before they get a chance to lay their eggs.and answered some turtle Q's.

It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating has been visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting usually happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills. The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana beaches. The releases usually start around the end of July or early August & are held periodically until early October.
Lately there have been many manta rays, in addition to many whale sharks. Offshore from MVC, we have been seeing dolphins from the balcony, and lotsa fish while snorkeling. Many mama turtles are visiting our beach lately.
There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July-August, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.

4pm Update....
We had lunch delivered from Manolitos today...their specials are:
Chiles Rellenos (Breaded chiles with picadillo inside..seasoned ground meat)
Trapa Vieja (Pulled beef with onions, served w pickled onions & a jalepeno)
Both include rice & tortillas, and we got a bag of hot sauce & a bag of beans.
They always have Poc Chuc (Yucatec pork bbq)
they always have Pork or Chicken Milanesa, (breaded w parmesan, photo on Wed post below)
Bruce said the Chile Rellenos were REALLY good. Then he said they were VERY good. I think he muttered "tasty' and "excellent". He says the bag of gravy could be eaten as soup. He said "Lotta food!" after he ate both rellenos. (He will try the trapa vieja manana.) Relleno means stuffed. Poblano chiles are used, removing the seeds, ribs, and skins, so they usually they are not hot, with some 'kick' at the top where the ribs may remain, inside the stem. Picadillo is ground meat (pork and beef, or just beef) with finely chopped vegies..often onion, carrot, bell pepper, and potatoes, maybe tomatoes, with seasonings, which may include garlic, and a little cloves.
Both meals with sides, including delivery, were 115p...about $9 plus tip.
Rellenos moved to a plate...
