  Residents in Salina Chica and La Gloria want city officials to give attention to some street lights that are not working, and have complained that there are some lights that remain on during the day. There are also some lights out on the track around Salina Grande, where people walk and exercise, and more light and police patrols would be beneficial to discourage loiterers from drinking in the area.

 The port Authority had announced plans to cordone off the area of Playa Norte known as El Riito with buoys for the summer holiday season, but this has not been accomplished yet. The Harbor Master said this work, which is traditionally done at this time, will be carried out with assistance form the municipal Civil Protection agency. The Harbor Master gave assurances that they have been managing resources for this project since the beginning of the year, and it is almost certain that with support from the private sector this protective barrier will be installed to protect swimmers from boats.

Entrepreneurs are predicting that domestic tourist arrivals could increase by up to 60% and then continue to rise until hotel occupancy reaches 80%. Tourism service providers have reported that business has been good in recent days, with the arrival of many domestic tourists for the summer holiday season. There are fewer foreign tourists, and many of them are visiting to swim with the whale sharks. Promotions and discounts have been offered to encourage  Mexican families to visit Isla Mujeres.

Ovidio Lopez    As is typical during the summer period, 70% of arriving tourists are from national destinations and the rest are from the US and Canada. The director of  Tourism says that Isla Mujeres is a classic traditional destination for residents of Mexico City and surrounding states, as well as from the neighboring state of Yucatan, who arrive en masse, and most spend the day. It is now the time when sea turtles are nesting and watching the spawning can be an unforgettable experience. Occupancy usually barely reaches 50 to 60% during the months of July and August, and it is estimated that will be reached or exceeded this summer, which is known as a low season.

Daily trash production is 30-35 tonnes and this increases by 10% during the holiday season. The reporter attributes the problem of trash accumulation to outdated equipment that suffers fequent mechanical problems.

Cloudiness caused a slight decline in tourism in Isla Mujeres this weekend, when many tourists were expected. This was changed by cloud cover and some light rain. There were few swimmers and the water service providers were affected, as well as the restauranteurs. Hotel occupancy remained at 60%, with most foreign tourists arriving from the United States and Mexico. Tourism is expected to increase to more than 80% next week.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
       By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills.  The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana beaches. The releases will begin in about a month & be held periodically until early October.
    Lately the water has been very calm and there have been many manta rays, with many swimming upside down, in addition to many whale sharks. Offshore from MVC, we have been seeing dolphins & turtles from the balcony, and lotsa big fish while snorkeling. 
 There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.
  Lobster season began July 1 and continues until the end of February.

Isla Animals
Daily Update: So we did 20 cats and dogs at our mini spay and neuter clinic. I would love to have one every three weeks. That way, when someone agrees to let us spay or neuter their animal we can jump right on it before they change their mind. Remember the poodle pups, three we bought and one runt they gave me, well they were done, what a relief. My biggest fear was that they’d be sold to islanders who would breed them. We saw way too many matted poodles this spring to let that happen. We didn’t get the shar pei but we won’t let that slide. Jeff and I picked up a ton of supplies yesterday from Lisa of “Lisa’s Small dog Rescue,” (thanks everyone who helped with that) and at a great “Mexi-Mutt” reunion outside of Toronto. We are driving them to Colorado this week. Then It’s back to Mexico for me, I can take supplies down and bring a puppy back. I can’t wait to see my babies.

This fantastic trip wouldn’t have been possible without the input of many wonderful people on this Facebook page. Thank you so much to everyone who gave us feedback, answered my questions, and gave tips for what to expect. I’d especially like to thank Christy Dix, Kirsten Tywan of Volunquest (who did a wonderful job making our trip arrangements), Ronda  (whose beach-front condo we wound up staying in the last week), Zina, and Tony. Although I miss a few amenities from home, I LOVE this island! I’m hoping to come back next summer or the summer after that with other family members. We got out and snorkeled, did the touristy things, and had some great meals, but the best part was sitting outside the condo on the beach looking out at the water. It is breath-taking! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Jennifer, this is a local 'bar dog' whose name is SCUBA. HE got that name because a dive boat found him swimming well offshore after he had A. been thrown off of a boat or B. fallen of of a boat and no one noticed. He is TRULY, literally a rescue dog. If ever there were a spoiled, happy dog who deserved it....this is the one. — with Diane White Daniel  at Marina Paraiso.
