On Friday at 11:30pm a report was received about a group men near Playa Mujeres on Isla Blanca who appeared to be undocumented and originating from Cuba. Police and members of the Navy found eight men in brushy area, who were unable to show documents and were turned over to Immigration. A search was done on land and sea and no additional people nor the vessel were found. The detainees said they had to swim ashore after their engine broke down.

Saturday morning around 7:15am in colonia Salina Chica, some youths noticed black smoke coming from a home near the cárcamo of Aguakan. They called out for help and began knocking on doors, and helped remove another tenant with two young children. The youths said they managed to open the door where the smoke was coming out, and started removing some electrical appliances to save the items, but they abandoned that to avoid problems. Then were surprised to find a deceased person.
The fire was put out by Civil Protection, with support from the Navy and Aguakan, using a line with a capacity of 10,000 liters. With the challenges of not having the proper equipment to deal with such situations, the work was delayed for more than an hour, but fortunately there was a lack of winds.
The reporter spoke with taxi driver Severo Tuz González, who said he had known the foreigner well for 16 years, and that his name was Paolo Poster, adding that he had taken the man's wife Linda to catch the 6:30 ferry that morning, to catch a flight to Minnesota for cancer treatment. The driver said goodbye to his friend, assuring him that he would take good care of his wife's departure and return so they could have breakfast together. He never imagined those would be the last words they exchanged and that he would return to find el "viejito" had died.
Apparently the foreigner had tried to cook something or had forgotten about some cigarette butts, because the taxi driver said he was a chain smoker, and forgot things because of his age. The cabbie said that on a previous occasion he had arrived at the apartment to find food burned on the stove.
Officials from the Attorney Generals' office (PGR) removed the body, which will be claimed by his wife. She was at the airport when she received the sad news, and returned to the island.

TV Isla Mujeres says police confirmed that the deceased was a 64 year old retired man from Lowa (sic) US named Allman Caroll Porter. He had lived in Isla Mujeres for over ten years, until he died Friday morning in a fire at his rental home in colonia Salina Chica.
Reportedly Aguakan staff noticed black smoke coming from one of the buildings. (They are responsible for monitoring a cárcamos in the area). They went to the building and helped save another tenant and her two children, but no one knew if anyone else was in the building at that time. Por Esto reports an elderly person died after his home caught fire, with a cigarette butt as the apparent cause. Some youths spotted the thick smoke coming from a home near the cárcamo of Aguakan, and immediately notified authorities. Paramedics from the Red Cross, police, and Navy personnel arrived within seconds. The fire was put out and when they approached the bathroom they were surprised to find a person with some burns, who had apparently died of asphyxiation. A taxi driver arrived on the scene, Severo Tuz González, who said he knew the deceased, saying he was a 65 year old named Paul, with some health problems. The cabbie called the deceased's wife, Linda, who was enroute to the airport for a flight to Minnesota for cancer treatment, until she was notified of the tragedy, and returned to Isla Mujeres. Later personnel from SEMEFO, the Medical Examiner''s office, arrived to review the scene and remove the body to their facilities (in Cancun) for an autopsy. The deceased's pets, a cat and a dog, also died in the fire.

Children from ages eight to 15 are invited to participate in this tournament "Coleguita" on Saturday July 20, with a dinner for the "Capitancitos" on Friday, July 19th at the DIF facility. The boats will depart from the dock of the cooperative Caribe at 9am. There will be two categories of those 8-11 and 12-15, and the only method of fishing will be trolling, accompanied by an adult captain. The fishing ends with the weigh in at 1 pm, for the top three places in each category. Although there are 3-4 participants per boat, prizes will be awarded to the individual who captured the fish, with surprise awards for six winners of the tournament. Registration is available at the DIF offices between 9am and 4pm, by a parent or guardian, who must submit a copy of the child's birth certificate, and sign a liability waiver authorizing the child's participation.

Critter events...
It is currently the season for swimming with the whale sharks, and turtles are mating offshore & nesting on the eastern beaches. The mating is visible by day, especially off Punta Sur, the South Point. The nesting happens in the wee hours, and there are Tortugranja personnel, volunteers, and Naval staff monitoring the beaches to prevent people from disrupting them, and to gather and transport the eggs for incubation.
By far, most of the turtles nesting in Isla Mujeres are Green turtles (called Blancas in Spanish), and the second most common are the huge Loggerheads, and there are some Hawksbills. The Green turtles take ~60 days to hatch and the hatchlings are released by the public at events at dusk on Media Luna or Guadalupana beaches. The releases will begin in about a month & be held periodically until early October.
Lately the water has been very calm and there have been many manta rays, with many swimming upside down, in addition to many whale sharks. Offshore from MVC, we have been seeing dolphins & turtles from the balcony, and lotsa big fish while snorkeling.
There are small red crabs that migrate to & from the sea in July, watch out for them at night on the coastal road at the southeastern part of the isle.

- Roger Hardesty There is a Papeleria 3 blocks north of Deysi y Raul's El Charcol restaurant on the same side of the street next to the escalera (stairway) street. Office and school supply store.

- Ronda There's a papeleria downtown just south of the town square, near the Ice cream store..near the basketball court with inexpensive supplies and kids activity books.
- Tiffany Yenawine Wareing Dunosusa has big packs of brownish paper bag type paper near the plastic bags along the wall. It is very inexpensive. I used to spread this out on the floor & let them finger paint & marker. Dunosusa is the store across from the Navy Hospital's emergency room. There is also a papeleria up the street from Dunosusa across from the tortilla factory. You can get water based paints. I used to save the tops from the garrafon water bottles to put little bits of paint in for them to use. You can then just throw them out making clean up easy! I used to also make homemade playdough with flour, salt & water. You can get food coloring at Chedraui. Have fun!

It's Campaign Time In Isla Mujeres ~wc
I haven't been covering the elections, mostly because Mexico prefers that foreigners don't interfere with local political activities. The election is next Sunday & in recent weeks there have been posters on the electric posts & light poles (except downtown), rallies on the weekends, and vehicles circulating with loudspeakers. The main candidates have their own songs. As we get closer, there are more rallies and marches in the evenings, sometimes with hundreds of people.
It is all very grass roots with the candidates going village to village, door to door, and meeting with the cooperatives & other organizations. The two main parties are PAN in blue & PRI in red, with candidates giving away hundreds of tee shirts.
Foreigners have been complaining on FB about the noise, the effects on traffic, and the litter that is occasionally left behind. The rallies are usually on weekends or in the early evening, and although they are noisy, they are very peaceful. Recently, groups of workers for the two opposing candidates for President of Isla (mayor) ran into each other in front of our house & they shouted greetings to each other enthusiastically, with smiles & waves!
One of the reasons this mayoral election is important is the municipal distribution of lots in the Continental Zone (on the mainland) to Islanders. The new Mayor will also be involved with the national plans for development of Ciudad Mujeres and Playa Mujeres, which have already begun. ~wc
