Island Mourns Death Of First Mayor
He was born July 10, 1938, and grew up in the house of the Magana family, and his father was known as an outstanding fisherman who became a prosperous businessman as a shipowner, merchant and politician, founding the first fishing cooperative in 1929, and serving in state government when Q Roo was a Territory. When interviewed about his childhood by the local historian, "Picho" recalled working at the bakery"La Colmena", which was housed in a large wooden building with a white sand floor, and fishing aboard a 23 foot boat called "Patria". In addition to being the first Mayor of Isla Mujeres, he is remembered as a leader of the fishermen and for his love of baseball.

Brush Fire In Sac Bajo
In an article dated April 29, Quequi/Carlos Gasca reports a fire consumed 40 square meters of brush yesterday on a vacant lot near the hotel Puerta al Mar. Hotel employees reported the fire shortly after 1pm, and began battling it with hoses from the hotel. Aguakan employees arrived and accessed a water pipe to fight the fire, and Civil Protection firefighters joined in using hoses from the hotel. The two fire trucks were not present and the last comment heard about them was both were "se encontraban en reparación"..being repaired. The fire was under control by 2pm and Aguakan removed the exposed pipes. The cause of the fire is unknown but residents say there are people who enter that property of 1500 square meters, and it is presumed they may have been burning trash and it got out of control. The lot is located in a residential area of Sac Bajo.
Labor Day Parade May Be "Thin"
The CROC labor union will not participate in the Labor Day Parade, "on instructions from Senator Isaías González Cuevas", said local labor union secretary Román Maldonado Euan. He said in its place the members would celebrate with their families. The union will hold a festival at 4p, at the Taxi Union lodge in La Gloria where they will raffle a motorcycle and other items for their members. Other unions have announced they do not plan to participate in the Labor Day Parade, so it is expected to be "tanto escualido"..rather sparse..or as GoogleTranslate says.."so scrawny"or "a bit skinny". From My FB feed......Looking at my blog stats to see Who in the World is interested in Isla Mujeres news & photos (in English). The US always leads, with Mx in second and then Canada (Canada's stats rise in direct coorelation to their temps dropping).Lately France is neck & neck w Canada & occasionally leading!..and Russia is close behind !?.., dropping UK from their usual 4th place. Surprisingly in #9 & 10 for the past month are China & Iran!! (It gives me top ten daily/weekly/monthly/all time) This week Romania and Poland are #9 & 10, with China in 8th and Germany 7th, just behind Russia. There are direct flights from the UK, Germany, France, & Russia to Cancun. Last time I had hits from China, on of my Isla-Canadian neighbors was visiting there. Quien sabe, but it is kinda interesting, to me to wonder who these folks are & what they think of the conglomeration of photos & info & odd comments I publish daily....
