No Influenza This Year
From Por Esto Feb 24 ....Hospital director, Dr. David Valenzo Loaeza, said there have been no cases of influenza this year, neither regular or H1N1. He said they took samples from 30 patients who had flu-like symptoms, and none tested positive. They saw 16 patients with respiratory symptoms last week, which is typical when there are abruptly changing temperatures. Regarding gastrointestinal symptoms, he said the number of patients has been minimal, but is expected to increase when temperatures increase in March, which causes food to spoil more quickly.

  Worried Fishermen
Feb 24...Por Esto reports the fishermen have not been able to go out the past four days due to weather, and can no longer harvest grouper or abadejo (pollack?) after Feb. 15. With the closing of lobster season on Feb. 29 and decreased catches, they do not have a stockpile of lobster. With Lent increasing demand, restauranteurs are looking elsewhere for seafood.

Feb 24 SISPE reports the winds kept ~600 small boats inactive Thursday and Friday with winds gusting up to 60-70 kph (37-43mph). The "Southeaster" emptied the Posada beach except for one foreign couple who endured the impact of the sand upon their bodies. The Harbormaster closed the port to small boats after 7am Friday (prohibiting them from leaving for open water.).

 Winds Drive Sunbathers To Streets
Feb 24...Por Esto reports winds discouraged many tourists from spending the day at the beach, with sand flying around. Hotel occupancy was 70% Friday. The Harbor Master closed the port to boats under 40 feet that wanted to enter the open sea, and restricted them to the area el Farito and the lagoon. But the winds and waves caused most visitors decide against snorkeling.

  Caught Less Lobster
Feb 24..From SIPSE ....The president of the fishing cooperative Social Justicia, Baltazar Gómez Catzín, reports lobster harvest is reduced by 30% this year compared to last year. He attributed this is to poor weather and a reduced population of lobster. He said previously the average fisherman obtained 100 kilos/day, but now they are returning with 20 to 40 kilos. During the 2010-2011 season the cooperatives accumulated a production of  30 tons of live lobster and 40 tons of tails. This year for the 2011-2012 season will close at 20 tons of live lobster and 30 tons of tails. The ban begins March 1.He explained that difficult times lie ahead for his cooperative which lends money to the 40 members, but their fund only has ~40,000pesos.(~$3225 or $80 per member. . 100 kilos/day  is 220 lbs, 30 kilos/day is 66 lbs. Thirty tons of tails is 60,000 lbs).

Talking Turkey
In Isla Mujeres
When we ate roasted turkey for the first time in Isla Mujeres, it was with local friends celebrating the New Year. We were surprised to find they stuffed it with ground meat, which turns out to be customary on the island. Isla families eat turkey on Christmas and New Year's Eve.
